After extreme budget cuts, Miami-Dade police warn residents to buy guns to protect themselves
by J. D. Heyes
(NaturalNews) The president of the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association is warning area residents, and Florida residents on whole, to get armed because increasingly, they won't be able to count on police to protect them.
In speaking to WSVN News, John Rivera said, "If the mayor's not going to provide security, then my recommendation, as an experienced law enforcement officer for nearly 40 years, put bars on your windows and doors and get yourself some firearms because you're going to have to protect yourselves."
He made his comments following a decision by Mayor Carlos Giminez to slash $64 million from his 2014-2015 budget, which could result in a loss of 600 police jobs to the county.
Miami-Dade is the largest local law enforcement department in the state of Florida, and is also one of the country's top 10, serving 2.5 million people.
Other communities have also warned residents to take care
The website Guns.com adds:
Several specialized units including the Incident Management Team, Sport Unit, Tactical Narcotics Team, and one of the three Special Response Teams in the city would be disbanded. The department would be forced to shutter one of its nine stations, specifically the Midwest District Station, as well as closing the Corrections Department's "Boot Camp" rehabilitation program for young inmates.
Nearly every division within the department, with the exception of the current 45 administrative leadership positions (the top supervisors, that is), would lose personnel under the mayor's planned cuts. That ranges from four officers slashed from Community and Youth Outreach to 17 domestic violence investigator positions cut from the Special Victims Bureau, which is responsible for following up on allegations of child abuse, in part.
Miami-Dade, while certainly the largest, is not the first police organization to warn Americans to take security matters into their own hands. Last year, David Clarke, sheriff of Milwaukee County, also warned residents to obtain a firearm for self-defense rather than be victimized by bad guys waiting for 9-1-1 [http://www.naturalnews.com/039041_911_self_defense_sheriff.html].
In a radio ad he produced and his office released, Clarke urged residents to buy a weapon and take a firearms safety course because "calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option."
Others have done so as well, but why? How come, in the 21st century, more Americans in more communities are less safe than they were even 20 years ago?
Resources will become more scarce
A huge part of the problem has to do with federal, state and local budgets. As more resources are siphoned off to pay for the ever-expanding welfare state, there is less money for the basic maintenance of the civil society, such as police and security.
What's more, the situation will only get worse, thanks in large part to the current chaotic situation along the U.S. southwest border. It is lawless and out of control, taxing already scarce resources. For example, reports have said recently that as many as 70 percent of Border Patrol officers have pulled off of actually patrolling the border because they are processing tens of thousands of illegal immigrants, many of the children [http://www.breitbart.com].
But more than that, many of these children are likely to be permitted to remain in the U.S., thanks to President Obama's 2012 policy change that deemphasizes deportation [http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/disorder-border_796395.html]. That means taxpayers will have to shoulder the burden to take care of them as well as older illegal immigrants, many of whom don't have any skills, are illiterate and have health problems.
The result will be even fewer resources available - on the federal, state and local levels - to provide basic security needs for border, certainly, but for communities as well. Already some local communities are complaining that they are running out of space, resources and funds because they have been forced to deal with the influx of humanity [http://latino.foxnews.com].
