Massive Ebola outbreak is largest in history
by J. D. Heyes
(NaturalNews) The current outbreak of the Ebola virus which is spreading across Africa has become the largest in history now, afflicting more than 660 people and killing 70 percent of them, according to reports.
The disease has even claimed American citizens, including a Minnesota resident who had been working for the government of Liberia in that country since 2008.
The victim, 40-year-old Patrick Sawyer, worked for Liberia's finance ministry, and had planned to visit his wife and their three children back home in Coon Rapids next month, NBC News reported, adding:
On July 20, Sawyer collapsed after getting off an Arik Air flight from Liberia to Lagos, Nigeria, where he was attending a conference. ...
He was quarantined in a Nigerian hospital until his death [July 25].
Liberia has closed its borders to try and contain the outbreak of the highly infectious disease that has also put neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone on high alert.
Reports said Sawyer was suffering from vomiting and diarrhea, both symptoms of the virus, during his trip to Nigeria, which included stopovers in Ghana and Toga. Nigerian officials have begun monitoring 59 people, including airline employees, who came into contact with Sawyer during his flight.
'It is not a matter of if Ebola comes, it's when'
Dave Hodges, host of The Common Sense Show, says the U.S. government is quietly establishing Ebola quarantine centers. He also said that, according to Border Patrol sources he has spoken with, "as many as 100,000 West Africans are being admitted to the United States under the same provisions that President Obama is presently admitting so-called 'unaccompanied minors.'"
"These people are from the same region of the world as the uncontained outbreak of Ebola. As Dr. [Jane] Orient said in her interview on The Common Sense Show, on June 30, 2014, 'It is not a matter of if Ebola comes into the United States, but when.'"
There are laws on the books in the U.S. for dealing with such outbreaks. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, such laws mandate "quarantine and isolation."
The CDC webpage on quarantine and isolation states:
The Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services has statutory responsibility for preventing the introduction, transmission, and spread of communicable diseases in the United States. Under its delegated authority, the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine works to fulfill this responsibility through a variety of activities, including
- the operation of Quarantine Stations at ports of entry
- establishment of standards for medical examination of persons destined for the United States, and
- administration of interstate and foreign quarantine regulations, which govern the international and interstate movement of persons, animals, and cargo.
The legal foundation for these activities is found in Titles 8 and 42 of the U.S. Code and relevant supporting regulations.
'Act of treason?'
The agency says that "isolation" is used to separate ill persons "who have a communicable disease from those who are healthy." Further, isolation is intended to restrict "movement of ill persons to help stop the spread of certain diseases."
Meanwhile, the website states, "Quarantine is used to separate and restrict the movement of well persons" who are thought to have been exposed to a communicable disease, in order to see if they subsequently become ill.
"These people may have been exposed to a disease and do not know it, or they may have the disease but do not show symptoms," the CDC says.
For his part, Hodges says the Obama administration ought to be taking extra-special care not to allow Ebola to cross our border:
Even if there was not a present immigration crisis at the border, there is a significant outbreak of Ebola in a seven country region of West Africa. With modern air travel, this government should be enacting protocols to limit the chances for Ebola from coming into the United States. Instead, President Obama is having ICE and DHS load up the busses [sic] and planes, at taxpayers expense to ship them throughout the United States without going through a minimum of a three week health screening period (i.e. Ebola's incubation period). This is highly irresponsible and could be considered to be an act of treason being committed against the people of the United States.
