U.S. EPA actively encourages children to increase their risk of dying from cancer
by Anthony DiRocco
(NaturalNews) The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) SunWise program aims to keep kids and families literally and figuratively "in the dark," while studies clearly show exposure to sunlight offers remarkable protection from cancer. A nation-wide study by William B. Grant, PhD, published in the American Cancer Society's journal, Cancer, found a striking correlation between the rates of 13 different cancers and the rates of UV exposure. As the locations observed moved from the south to the north, the sun's UV rays became naturally less intense, but cancer rates and cancer deaths increased dramatically.
The results confirmed findings from previous studies "that showed solar UV-B radiation is associated with reduced risk of cancer of the breast, colon, ovary, and prostate as well as non-Hodgkin lymphoma" in addition to finding eight more cancers that dwindle with adequate amounts of sunlight, including "bladder, esophageal, kidney, lung, pancreatic, rectal, stomach, and corpus uteri [uterus]." The study concludes that "[a]pproximately 23,600 Americans died every year between 1970 and 1994 from malignancies associated with insufficient solar UV-B radiation" and "that cancer incidence and mortality rates in the U.S. and elsewhere could be reduced significantly by increased UV-B exposure or supplementary vitamin D consumption."
More sun equals less cancer: The role of vitamin D
According to the National Cancer Institute, "Vitamin D is essential for the formation, growth, and repair of bones and for normal calcium absorption and immune function. It is obtained primarily through exposure of the skin to ultraviolet radiation in sunlight."
Vitamin D is essential for life, and American children have dangerously low levels. A 2009 study found a whopping 70% of our children had insufficient levels of vitamin D, and new studies continue to spotlight the connection between proper levels and a dramatic reduction in a wide range of cancers, many between 60 and 77%! Consider the fact that melanoma, the rarest but deadliest form of skin cancer, is on the rise with indoor workers but not with outdoor workers, who typically get three to nine times more solar UV radiation. More sun equals more vitamin D equals less cancer.
The EPA's attempt to create a supervillain leaves them looking in the mirror
The EPA created the SunWise program "[i]n response to the serious public health threat posed by exposure to UV rays." Notice the use of the word "exposure," and not "overexposure." Could they really believe that ANY amount of sun poses a serious health risk? Indeed they could. The program's "Sun Safety Action Steps" include getting adequate vitamin D, but never at the expense of being in the sun: "Get Vitamin D safely through a diet that includes vitamin supplements and foods fortified with Vitamin D. Don't seek the sun."
This program is being implemented in schools and communities across the nation to spread their zero-tolerance policy towards exposing our skin to the cancer-fighting, life-giving energy of our sun, dismissing the 23,600 Americans who die every year from low levels of sunlight as irrelevant and expendable members of our society. We know them as our moms, dads, brothers, sisters and children.
A more common sense recommendation comes from Johns Hopkins Medicine, suggesting that "[c]aution should also be taken not to overdo exposure to sunlight, as excessive UV radiation from the sun damages skin cells and may cause certain types of skin cancer." Too much of anything can have a negative impact on life, and as usual, common sense applies. The health benefits of sunlight are too important to block out of our children's bodies. The sun has a far greater chance of saving a life than destroying it.
