Solutions for Erectile Dysfunction
by Lisa S. Lawless, Ph.D.
(NaturalNews) Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is becoming more common in men, and the increase in health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, stress, depression and even many prescription medications, is certainly a substantial contributor. As ED is related to a variety of health concerns, it is important that a man who is struggling with sexual performance issues has a physical exam to discern the root cause in case medical attention is needed.
The most well-known way to treat Erectile Dysfunction is by taking the prescription drug made by Pfizer known as Viagra. The problem with relying on Viagra, however, is that it can cause a variety of undesirable side effects, and it only works in two-thirds of men who use it. This leaves many men wondering what their options are with most men wanting to avoid some of the more intense treatments such as Insertion Therapy (an erection enhancing drug that is inserted into the penis through use of a pellet or syringe through the urethra) and Penile Prosthesis (penis implants).
Alternative treatment for erectile dysfunction
Less drastic means to address ED are through the use of nutritional supplements. The most common supplements are flaxseed oil, arginine (an amino acid), Ginkgo biloba, zinc, vitamin E, vitamin C, DHEA and bioflavonoids.
In addition, acupuncture can also be used to treat ED, whether it is from physical or emotional causes, by using fine needles that are typically placed just below the navel. Sometimes, Chinese herbs are also used to increase the balancing process to achieve successful results. Studies have shown that there is noted improvement for men who use acupuncture to address ED issues; and, depending on the severity, the treatment averages about ten weeks.
For men considering using acupuncture to address ED concerns, it is important to always use a licensed acupuncturist as well as to disclose any medications you are taking so that they can review the impact those may be having on your sexual performance in addition to any contraindications of supplements or herbs that you may be taking.
Vacuum erection devices and penis rings
Another alternative method of treating Erectile Dysfunction is using what is called a vacuum erection device (a.k.a. penis pump), which pulls blood into the chambers of the penis. Many men are under the impression that the pumps were solely created to increase size; however, that is not true, they were designed and are for assisting in attaining a firm erection. These vacuum erection devices are used to make a man more firm and are often used in combination with penis rings that hold the blood in place after the pump is used. These penis rings rest at the base of the penile shaft and are similar to tying off a balloon in that they hold the blood in the penis more easily. It is important that men never use a penis ring that cannot easily be removed, such as a closed metal ring, as there is a danger of it becoming so difficult to remove that a hospital visit would be in order. When using a vacuum erection device, it is also important to follow the instructions as they can cause tissue damage when used with too much suction or for an extended amount of time.
Hollow extensions
When Erectile Dysfunction is unable to be treated effectively or treatment is semi-effective, many men use hollow penis extensions that allow them to continue having sexual intimacy with their partner. Hollow penis extensions are typically used with a harness that allows for the user to wear it and place their penis inside the prosthetic penis. There are also harnesses that have two holes, allowing a man to use a prosthetic penis while still having skin-to-skin contact with his partner, which may enhance intimacy. When choosing a prosthetic penis, make sure to select one that is made from safe, nontoxic materials, as many on the market contain phthalates, which are known toxins.
