Side Effects film in theaters now

by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) Hollywood has taken an unanticipated, but obviously appropriate, interest in the subject of antidepressant drugs in the new psychological "thriller-neo-noir" film Side Effects, which is currently making the rounds in theaters nationwide. Like the name portends, Side Effects draws attention to the real-life side effects of antidepressants by couching them in a fast-paced and highly-entertaining drama fueled with suspense, mystery, and intrigue.

Following the release of her husband from a brief prison term for insider trading, Emily Taylor, played by Rooney Mara, begins to unravel mentally. Stricken with anxiety, depression, and insomnia, Emily visits a psychiatrist by the name of Jonathan Banks, played by Jude Law, who prescribes her an assortment of popular antidepressant drugs, which include Zoloft, Prozac, Wellbutrin and Effexor, all of which are mentioned by name in the film.

When these drugs fail to provide effective relief for Emily, Jonathan decides to give his patient an experimental, and fictional, drug known as Ablixa, which threatens to elicit a whole inventory of harmful side effects, just like its real-life counterparts. And Emily, of course, ends up developing a sleepwalking condition from the drug that causes her to murder her husband Martin in the middle of the night.

This tragedy, and the cascade of tumult that ensues, brings to life the very reason why we make such a big deal about antidepressant drugs here at Natural News -- the indiscriminate peddling of these mind-altering psychotropics by modern psychiatry is literally destroying people's lives. And to see this fleshed out, albeit with some counteractive influence from Big Pharma, in a mainstream film shows just how serious the issue has become.

"We live in a world where everybody wants a quick fix for their problems," said Dr. Sasha Bardey, a psychiatrist and clinical instructor at New York University (NYU)'s Langone Medical Center, a co-producer of Side Effects, to The New York Times (NYT) about the film. According to the NYT, Dr. Bardey's film and its subject matter reflects many of his real-life experiences working with mental patients at the old Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward in New York City.

Regulatory authorities have known for decades that SSRIs are extremely dangerous

Antidepressant drugs, you see, and particularly selective serotonin reputake inhibitors (SSRIs), have an extensive track record of causing serious and sometimes irreversible harm. SSRIs are also ridiculously over-prescribed today for off-label health conditions that they were never intended or approved to treat. The result? A high risk of birth defects, hypertension, suicidal and homicidal tendencies, and even sudden death for millions of people, many of whom are children.

"Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) antidepressants -- even before they first reached the market in the late 1980s -- were known to cause suicide, aggression and other violent behavior," explains a comprehensive report on psychotropic drugs put together by the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR).

"Two years before the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved Prozac there was evidence that the rate of suicide with the drug was more than five times greater than with an existing antidepressant on the market."
