Cuomo plans to exempt Hollywood from New York gun control laws: So you can still watch gun violence depicted on screen

by J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) When New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the nation's strictest anti-gun law in the country just a month ago, he did so while proclaiming loudly, from on high, that he was acting out of moral principle.

"I say to you forget the extremists. It's simple - no one hunts with an assault rifle. No one needs 10 bullets to kill a deer and too many people have died already," he thundered during his State of the State speech.

A compliant New York Legislature complied and within days, Cuomo had his gun control law.

"I am proud to be New Yorker because New York is doing something, because we are fighting back. Because, yes, we've had tragedies; yes we've had too many innocent people lose their life; yes, it's unfortunate that it took those tragedies to get us to this point, but let's at least learn from what has happened," he lectured after he signed the measure.

So, Cuomo's the epitome of a moral, just and principled leader, right?

Sure.

'We spend a lot of money bringing movie production here'

The ink has barely dried from his signature on the law and already the gun-control governor is looking to modify it. For none other than that bastion of principle and morality, Hollywood.

The New York law placed obscene restrictions on military look-alike rifles and high-capacity semiautomatic handguns, but Cuomo announced in late February is will seek to change those restrictions so those kinds of weapons can be used on the sets of television shows and movies that are being filmed in New York.

"We spend a lot of money in the state bringing movie production here, post production here. So obviously we would want to facilitate that," Cuomo said in an interview with a local radio station.

Obviously.

Cuomo said prop firearms used in movies and television programs wouldn't be classified as an assault weapon. "But people want certainty and there's no reason not to make a change like that," he said. "Apparently they have blanks or they have phony magazines or something."

Yeah. "Or something."

But that's not all that needs to be "fixed" with the new law, which was passed so quickly that some lawmakers complained no one had a chance to fully read and understand it.

As it reads now, the law forbids police officers from carrying the very same high-capacity magazines that the measure bans ordinary citizens from carrying. That goof-up meant; however, that the fight over the rest of the law may not yet be over, CBS New York reported. As the state legislature reconsidered the new measures, thousands of New York residents came to the capital of Albany to protest it.

When pandering to Hollywood, principles take a back seat

The law was passed in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting at Newtown, Conn., where 20 first graders and six adults were murdered by Adam Lanza, 20, who reportedly was taking dangerous psychotropic drugs at the time.

Lanza reportedly took the pharmaceutical drug Fanapt, made by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. According to the drug company's literature, published on the packing insert, Fanapt is prescribed to treat schizophrenia in adults. Fanapt was approved by the FDA after ONLY two short-term research trials: a four-week and a six-week trial.

Hollywood has received its own scrutiny in the wake of Newtown, considering the gratuitous use of guns by filmmakers and stars - some of the very same ones who are advocated Cuomo-style gun control and outright gun bans and confiscation.

And yet Hollywood's gun-movie-making elite are being excused, enabled and pandered to by like-minded statist politicians such as Cuomo, who, at the same time, seek to punish ordinary citizens with punitive and unconstitutional gun control.

How quickly the "principled" Gov. Cuomo has lost his moral compass.
