Electromagnetic field intolerance - An epidemic in the making
by Lloyd Burrell
(NaturalNews) A smartphone or a teddy bear for the baby? According to a study involving 1,650 mothers living in the UK, almost 30 percent of the moms surveyed chose a smartphone over milk or some other common form of comfort for their crying, restless, or unoccupied child. This choice of distraction can be viewed as the beginning of a lifetime of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and possibly the initiation of electromagnetic field intolerance. Also known as electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), this condition is associated with long-term contact with low levels of EMFs emitted from a myriad of electrical devices.
Symptoms of EHS stem from exposure to technology in the form of cell phones, laptops, PCs, wireless routers, and cordless phones, with the list extending to include everyday household appliances and even fluorescent lighting.
These symptoms are wide-ranging and differ for each individual, the more common complaints are: insomnia, fatigue, depression, chronic headaches, irritability, cognitive problems, chronic infections, joint pain, and numbness or tingling in the extremities.
Is this really an epidemic in the making? The research seems to suggest yes. There are over 500 studies on the negative effects of cell phone radiation alone. Over the last 15 years, reports, conferences, and studies have found even more serious health complications related to exposure to EMFs.
Some of these are:
 Brain tumors
 Changes in DNA
 Cardiovascular problems
 Compromised immune function
 Childhood leukemia
 Nervous system disruption
The reality of electromagnetic hypersensitivity worldwide
While EHS is still considered controversial and even questioned to the point of its existence, Dr. Dominique Belpomme, a French oncology professor and part of a group of researchers in Paris has shown that this intolerance to EMFs is a real physical illness, just like cancer and heart disease. He explains, "EMFs provoke major effects in the brain. The most important of these is the opening of the blood-brain barrier. This allows mercury, organochlorines and other pollutants to enter the brain, where they cause various neurodegenerative diseases."
Professor Magda Havas of Trent University supports Dr. Belpomme's explanation. "Anywhere between three and five percent of the population has severe electrical sensitivity... There is about 35 percent of the population who has the symptoms of electrical sensitivity, they may or not realize that they are electrically sensitive."
Over 10,000 adult men and women residing in Sweden who participated in a survey on EMFs also support these findings. The survey's results conveyed the population's belief in the existence of EMFs with those suffering from increasing sensitivity to EMFs sharing symptoms in the form of allergies as well as other kinds of hypersensitivities.
A first in Canada (Toronto), the Women's Health Hospital dedicates a section of the facility to an environmental health clinic which focuses on educating those working in the medical field as well as individual patients on the prevalence of EHS. Canada's progressive views in regards to the existence of EHS and the health problems associated with it are clearly seen in other ways too. Some areas of the country have decided to slow down and take a look at the effects of electromagnetic fields on children, who are by far the most susceptible population. Certain schools have made the decision to remove Wi-Fi in the classroom.
The real travesty of EHS is the majority of people, whether it's children, teenagers, or adults, who are adversely affected, remain ignorant to the actual cause of the illness. EHS has the power to wreck people's lives. Those afflicted become refugees from technology, feel ostracized from society, and live in obscure places; anything to seek out EMF-free zones.
