Teens Rage Over Secret Toxic Chemicals in Popular Store
by Mike Barrett
(NaturalNews) A group of teens in the Bay Area recently protested against perfume pollution. The teens wore surgical masks and gas masks and carried signs expressing their anger towards certain toxic perfume ingredients. The teens stormed into an Abercrombie & Fitch store in San Francisco's Westfield Mall, in a peaceful yet effective protest. In retaliation of the teens' efforts, the store closed to all customers. The police were also notified.
"They made us spray the signature scents every 20 minutes like clockwork, so the store always smells," a former Abercrombie & Fitch employee admitted. Just as extra oxygen is supposedly pumped into casinos, many fragrances are often pumped into millions of stores across the globe in order to maintain an appealing scent. These scents contain toxic chemicals that have been linked to a number of conditions. It is surprising that the constant aroma does not largely decrease profits.
Recent tests conducted by the nonprofit advocacy group Campaign for Safe Cosmetics showed that "Fierce", a fragrance made by Abercrombie & Fitch, contains 11 chemicals that are not listed on the ingredients label. Some of these unlisted ingredients are sensitizers which can activate common health ailments such as asthma, headaches, and contact dermatitis.
It is estimated that women put 515 chemicals onto or into their bodies every day. Many ingredients in everyday cosmetics contain chemicals that have been linked to a long list of health problems. It is estimated that less than 20% of chemicals used in these everyday products have been assessed for safety. Many products contain carcinogens and neurotoxins that can cause serious problems such as complications regarding brain development, and even cancer.
The Federal Fair Packaging and Labeling Act of 1973 allows makers of perfumes, colognes, and body sprays to hide the chemicals that comprise their fragrances. These "secret" chemicals are contained in many of the most popular perfumes and colognes, including "Fierce".
It is uplifting to see such strong opposition against synthetic chemicals that are known to harm humans and animals alike. People have a right to know what they are putting on their skin and the risks associated with doing so. The Abercrombie & Fitch upheaval proves that unknowing exposure to "secret" chemicals will not be tolerated, and that many people are in direct opposition to the efforts of Abercrombie & Fitch to fill their stores with synthetic chemicals.
