by Melanie Grimes
(NaturalNews) World Homeopathy Awareness Week is an international celebration of homeopathy. The event commences on the 255th birthday of the founder of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann, on April 10th 2010. Events around the world invite participants to free talks, lectures, information sessions, and homeopathic consultations.
Events to celebrate World Homeopathy Awareness Week are planned in over 40 countries: including Armenia, Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Greece, Germany, Hungary, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Lithuania, Malta, Nepal, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Pakistan, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States. In the US, events are planned in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Washington and other states. Up-to-date information on events in the US is available at www.usahomeopathy.org.
The theme for the 2010 Awareness Week is Homeopathy and Mental Well-being, with a focus on mind and body in balance. Homeopathy is a mind/body medicine that includes symptoms from the body and the mind for healing.
Homeopathy has come under attack in recent years and the spread of unscientific information about homeopathy has fueled a debate in Great Britain and other countries, making awareness of the healing power of homeopathy more important than ever. In England, a declaration in support of homeopathy was signed by nearly 30,000 people and delivered to the Prime Minister and Parliament urging the government to include homeopathy in the national healthcare program. In the United States, homeopathic care is not usually covered by insurance, but some insurance providers cover homeopathic care by MDs or NDs (naturopathic doctors). Homeopathy is also practiced by midwives, acupuncturists, and those certified by the Council for Homeopathic Certification (CCH). The CCH keeps a directory of practitioners on their website at http://www.homeopathicdirectory.com/.
Samuel Hahnemann was born on April 10th, 1755 in Meissen, Germany. He was a German medical doctor who became dissatisfied with the medical practice at the time. He refused to practice bloodletting and other common treatments and instead earned his living as a translator, using his skills in over a dozen languages. During his years doing medical translation work, he discovered the concept of the Law of Similars, which he named homeopathy in 1790. The Law of Similars uses substances that cause a symptom to cure that symptom, much as we commonly use snake venom to treat snakebites. His seminal work, The Organon of the Medical Art, commonly known as The Organon, is used as a textbook in homeopathic colleges worldwide.
