(NaturalNews) An 81-year-old grandmother is the latest victim of an outdated "war on drugs" mentality that continues to prevent innocent citizens from benefiting from the wonders of one of nature's most versatile and effective medicinal gifts - the marijuana plant.
A recent raid involving state police, Massachusetts National Guard ground troops and a helicopter resulted in the confiscation and removal of a single marijuana plant cultivated by retired homemaker Margaret "Peg" Holcomb of Amherst, MA. who uses cannabis to treat her
glaucoma.
Every year, Holcomb grows one marijuana plant in her backyard, but this year her lone six-foot plant became the target of a "marijuana eradication operation" conducted jointly by the state police and National Guard in western Massachusetts.
"I've kept my glaucoma at bay smoking this wonderful, healthful, vital plant"
The grandmother won't admit to any wrongdoing and is highly vocal in defending her right to grow the medicinal herb:
"I've grown marijuana for many years — one plant. I don't sell it. I don't talk about it. Some people drink wine at night, occasionally I'll have a little smoke. ... I've kept my glaucoma at bay smoking this wonderful, healthful, vital plant."Holcomb wasn't at home when the raid occurred, but her son Tim, who was working in his mother's barn during the September 21 incident, recalled hearing a helicopter "buzzing really low."
He said he saw a military-style helicopter circling his mother's property, and then within minutes several cars pulled up filled with law enforcement agents.
Although the troopers had no search warrant, they convinced Tim that he had no choice other than to comply.
From the
Boston Herald:
"Peg's son decided the wiser course was to let the lawmen cut down the plant and throw it into the back of their pickup truck filled with other pot plants.
"'That's a clear violation of my mother's rights to privacy,' he said."Peg Holcomb agrees: "This kind of thing can't happen," she said. "It smacks of police state and fascism."
But it does happen - all the time...
Why are medical marijuana users still being persecuted?
Peg Holcomb was lucky enough to not be charged with a criminal offense, but every year otherwise ordinary law-abiding citizens are jailed for charges connected to the cultivation, sale or possession of marijuana used for medicinal purposes.
Although federal policies regarding the prosecution of medical marijuana "offenders" are beginning to be relaxed, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and the Justice Department continue to harass and imprison those who run afoul of the current laws.
The amount of money wasted on this enforcement is enormous - one can't help but wonder how much the raid on Peg Holcomb's property cost the taxpayers of Massachusetts - and that's just one small example of what is happening around the entire country on a daily basis.
Aside from the financial aspect, the cost to our freedom is even more dear - the continuation of the senseless war on medical marijuana users, after hundreds of studies have proven its efficacy in treating a wide range of conditions, is completely indefensible.
The criminalization of people who are seeking relief from glaucoma,
PTSD, opioid addiction and a long list of other serious health issues is criminal in itself. No one who can benefit from the natural healing properties of cannabis should be prevented from using it, much less put in jail for doing so.
But Big Pharma and Big Law Enforcement stand to lose billions of dollars if medical marijuana is made legal and easily available for those throughout the country who need it - and that's the real reason why the
prohibition of cannabis continues to this day.
Greed and control are the motivation - it has absolutely nothing to do with protecting the populace from a plant we already know is harmless and extremely beneficial.
