Cases of Alzheimer's disease are on the rise. More than 5 million Americans currently suffer from the devastating condition, and it is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.
Drug-based treatments for Alzheimer's have been disappointingly ineffective, but there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that
coconut oil – a completely natural, inexpensive and widely available product – may be an effective aid in preventing and treating the disease.
The anecdotal evidence has been extremely promising. For example, an article recently published by
Health Impact News involved the case of a woman whose 88-year-old mother suffers from Alzheimer's.
The woman reported that after removing her mother from a nursing home and commencing a daily topical coconut oil treatment, the 88-year-old displayed a dramatic and immediate improvement in her condition.
Within days after beginning the daily coconut oil rubdowns, the mother's memory began to return:
"She is speaking better and I gave her a Bible story book to read me yesterday and she could read it through with exception of a few words. My mother could not do this one week ago or for the last two years.
"She is remembering people and things that have not been spoken of for years. I can now show her pictures and she can name people, even her children now."
Coconut oil shows promise in preliminary trials; more research now underway
As encouraging as stories like these may be, the only way to determine the true extent of coconut oil's purported benefits is through peer-reviewed clinical trials.
Unfortunately, these types of trials are usually funded by pharmaceutical companies which seek to make a profit from developing new drugs, and
natural plant-based treatments are of little interest to such companies.
As a result, there have been few studies to date involving coconut oil as a possible treatment for Alzheimer's.
However, one preliminary study conducted in Spain and published in 2015 showed positive results, suggesting that
coconut oil may be quite effective in treating Alzheimer's in some types of patients, particularly among women.
The researchers reported a "statistically significant" increase in the scores of tests measuring mental ability among subjects who were given 40 ml/day of extra virgin coconut oil. The conclusion was that
treatment with coconut oil led to an "improvement in cognitive status, improving especially women's, those without diabetes mellitus type II, and severe patients."
Another coconut oil study is currently underway, with the results expected to be published sometime this year. This new research is being conducted by the University of South Florida's Health Byrd Alzheimer's Institute, with funding provided by private sources.
What makes coconut oil an effective treatment for fighting Alzheimer's?
It is believed that the therapeutic benefits of coconut oil in combating the effects of Alzheimer's are related to the high levels of
medium chain triglycerides (MCT) that it contains.
Coconut oil is composed of 66 percent MCT, which is converted by the liver into ketones that act as "brain fuel," restoring and repairing neurons while also improving nerve function in the brain.
It's a complex process, and one that is not yet fully understood, but the good news is that

But considering the available anecdotal and scientific evidence, there is a good chance that Alzheimer's patients who are given coconut

If coconut oil lives up to its promise, it could prove to be the most effective tool we have in preventing and treating this terrible disease – and without having to resort to prescribing dangerous and expensive pharmaceutical drugs.
