Bird flu

(NaturalNews) Perhaps you knew it was coming: state health authorities are calling for citizens to "register" their backyard poultry and other animals with the state in order to prevent disease outbreaks. North Carolina's "state veterinarian" has launched a registration program in response to avian bird flu, the latest problem-reaction-solution proposal by nanny staters trying to get their grubby little hands into the self-reliance movement.

As you might recall, North Carolina went into a fever-pitched craze after reports emerged of possible bird flu cases in the north earlier this summer. Officials almost immediately banned all live sales of poultry, and they even cancelled the traditional poultry shows that take place at the state fair every year despite the fact that no actual bird flu cases were reported in North Carolina.

Call it a hunch if you like, but Doug Meckes, the head of North Carolina's poultry police, was sure that avian bird flu might reach his state at some point, so he joined other state officials to come up with a "solution" to a "problem" that was never actually a real problem in North Carolina, stating the following recently:

"In planning our response for highly pathogenic avian influenza, one problem we've come across is that we can't protect birds that we don't know exist. We need to know where poultry are located so we can properly protect commercial and backyard flocks."

Mandatory government "registration" programs almost always end in tyranny and human rights abuses

Government registration of private property is always done in the interest of public safety. Just look at what's happened throughout history when populations were forced to register their guns, their gold, and their animals: they've typically been stripped of these items later by rogue governments trying to consolidate their power.

The Organic Prepper's Daisy Luther puts it this way in a piece published by The Daily Sheeple:

"Given the history of any type of registration (cough *guns* cough), is it any stretch of the imagination whatsoever to think your backyard chickens or your small homestead will not become vulnerable to some kind of future 'public safety' mandate?"

"Do you think they could be subject to seizure or execution based on the whims of the state? And what do you think will happen to families who don't register their chickens? Do you really honestly feel safer with the state knowing your business?"

Animal registration laws behind Michigan's destruction of backyard heritage pigs

If this sounds far-fetched, consider what happened in Michigan back in 2012. The state's Department of Natural Resources issued an "Invasive Species Order Amendment" (ISO) that basically outlawed all heritage pig breeds from being raised on family farms. Farmers who raised such pigs were forced to give them up for slaughter or risk facing felony charges.

What was initially presented as a public safety measure quickly spiraled into outright tyranny for folks like Mark Baker, who was among several Michigan farmers raided at gunpoint for "violating" Michigan's "for your own protection" ISO decree. Baker was forced to kill all of his pigs not because they were dangerous but because the state knew about them and wanted them gone.

"It took 12 guys 4 times in there to kill all of them, sows with young, pregnant sows, dozens of piglets, and old mature boars," Baker recounted on his farm website, BakersGreenAcres.com. "Does anyone know what it feels like to open fire on 20 baby piglets in one group which weight between 5 lbs. and 15 lbs. They are so adorable and cute."

If North Carolina residents don't fight their state's new poultry registration program, a similar fate could one day come to their own animals. If officials in North Carolina eventually decide that backyard poultry is a threat to public health, all they would need to do is check the registry lists and go one by one, destroying entire flocks.
