(NaturalNews) Americans have always been in love with corn. Popped corn is now an essential part of going to a movie and nothing says "summertime" like fresh corn on the cob. As a matter of fact, most Americans get more corn in the their diet than they even realize: It is in dishes like hushpuppies, the batter in many fried foods, and even processed foods like sodas and commercial baked goods, which are rich in high fructose corn syrup. Americans even get corn in their diet through eating meats from animals that were raised on a corn-rich diet. The problem is that, thanks to large ag companies like Monsanto, most corn grown in American nowadays has been genetically modified. This can lead to an array of problems, not only for humans but for the animals that are fed these altered plants. Let's take a closer look at the dangers of GMO corn.
An "ah ha" moment
To make this issue personal, let's look at Jerry Rosman, a former cattle and pig farmer who once raised his livestock according to the conventional methods. He is now an organic farmer, as well as someone who consults with other farmers and gives them advice about organically raising their own livestock.
Rosman himself got out of the conventional livestock business when he realized that the GMO corn he was feeding his livestock was actually harming them and interfering with their reproduction and fertility. These fertility problems - like false pregnancies among sows - led him to lose his farming business. And once he realized what had happened, he began to wonder if GMO corn was causing this many problems for his livestock, what was it doing to the people who ate it?
GMO corn and the FDA
Rosman's claim that the government is not interested in learning more about the dangers of GMO corn is borne out by facts such as a former chief lobbyist from
Monsanto now taking a prominent position at the Food and Drug Administration. The fact is that Big Ag is an incredibly powerful lobbying PAC in Washington and this largely protects them from too much FDA scrutiny.
There are more facts that Rosman points out that are disturbing to those concerned with public health. To begin with, there were no food trials to study the effects of GMO corn-based feeds on livestock. And now meats and other products based on this modified
corn are increasingly finding their way into the human food chain, again, with no testing ahead of time to determine its safety or lack thereof. This is why Rosman and others are trying to raise the alarm, and raise public awareness of the
GMO issue.
In short, Rosman is part of a greater movement to educate the public on the dangers of genetically modified corn, which makes up a much bigger part of the American diet than most people realize. And the more the American public learns about modified grains, the more they will realize that the dangers outweigh possible benefits.
