(NaturalNews) The Obama Department of Justice, led by activist Attorney General Eric Holder, is worried that "lone wolf," home-grown terrorists could strike so-called "soft targets" anywhere in the country at any time. In fact, Holder said recently, it is a scenario that keeps him awake at night.

According to a recent CBS News interview, Holder -- who has announced that he is stepping down from his post -- said the White House plans to hold a summit February 18 in Washington, D.C., to examine "the root causes" of terrorist attacks such as the one recently in Paris, France.

"'Countering violent extremism' is what we call it--[so] we can deal with the root causes of what it is that attracts these young men to these really negative ideological groups," Holder told CBS' Face the Nation program -- without mentioning that the "violent extremism" linked to the overwhelming number of terrorist attacks today are committed by militant Islamist adherents.

"Homegrown terrorism"

That said, Holder told the program's host, Bob Schieffer, that for some time, the Justice Department has focused increasingly on the potential rise of "homegrown terrorism."

"The decimation of Al Qaeda has probably reduced or eliminated the ability of Al Qaeda [sic] to do the kind of thing they did on September the 11th," Holder said, as quoted by MemoryHoleBlog.com, though al Qaeda is actually on the rise in places like Iraq, Yemen, Libya, the Egyptian Sinai and throughout North Africa.

"On the other hand," Holder continued, "Al Qaeda affiliates in the Arabian Peninsula has [sic] moved to what they do to smaller kinds of attacks. They have inspired people around the world to these really small attacks that involve only one or two people--a small number of arms that can have a devastating impact, as we have seen in France."

And such attacks are much more likely be committed in the U.S. by some of the same one-or-two-person cells than a major complex attack like that which occurred on 9/11, Holder and others believe.

At the same time, Americans face a host of other domestic and geopolitical challenges, and some of them are directly tied to the government's growing fear of homegrown terrorism. The surveillance state, for example, is out of control; the nation faces a mounting financial crisis as the national debt soars past $18 trillion; the global economy continues to slump; terrorist entities grow stronger and more threatening.

"We live in a police state"

One man who believes that hard times are ahead is former Texas Rep. Dr. Ron Paul. Writing in a recent column, Dr. Paul laid out a series of issues and problems that could come crashing down on American civil society as early as this year. Here are some excerpts from his Ron Paul Institute column, in which he makes some startling 2015 predictions and observations:

-- "If Americans were honest with themselves they would acknowledge that the Republic is no more. We now live in a police state."

-- "With cradle-to-grave welfare protecting all citizens from any mistakes and a perpetual global war on terrorism, which a majority of Americans were convinced was absolutely necessary for our survival, our security and prosperity has been sacrificed."

-- "Reality is now setting in for America and for that matter for most of the world. The piper will get his due even if 'the children' have to suffer."

-- "[The] warfare/welfare state requires police control."

-- "Under an authoritarian regime, those in power take care of themselves."

-- "We must realize that we are not exempt from a breakdown of our system."

-- "The insiders benefit during the bubble phase of the business cycle and are the first ones in line for the bailouts."

-- "Police brutality and militarization may well induce a violent event far beyond what we have seen in Ferguson."

-- "The economic and moral decay of American society is reflected in the loss of liberties."

-- "Government surveillance provides the state with information that enables it to know our every move. The protection of the Fourth Amendment is gone."

-- "Violation of our liberties is excused by the majority in order to ensure that all people 'pay their fair share.' When conditions deteriorate, capital controls are imposed to prevent moving assets out of the country."
