(NewsTarget) Most people understand that smog, cigarettes and rotten food are dangerous to consume. Yet the majority of people in industrialized countries use some of the most toxic and carcinogenic substances within their own home every day. Commercialized personal care products and household cleaning agents are laced with poisonous chemicals that infiltrate our home and bodies. Cleanse your home of these harmful chemicals by using natural alternatives.

Household Cleaning Agents: Standard products are highly toxic and carcinogenic. Some ingredients to look out for include sodium hypochlorite, formaldehyde, perchloroethylene, phenol & cresol. Much better alternatives include citrus-based cleaners that are both effective and green-friendly. Typically made with orange or lemon peels, these products are non-toxic, petroleum-free and biodegradable. Natural acids such as lemon/lime and vinegar are great for cutting grease and are natural antiseptics. Another great solution is using 3% hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in separate bottles sprayed together on dirty surfaces.

Air Fresheners: These products simply mask one smell with another. They smell good, but they contain very hazardous nerve deadening chemicals and often coat the nasal passages with an undetectable oil film. Aerosol fresheners can be especially harmful to the lungs if inhaled in heavy quantities or for prolonged periods of time.

Natural solutions to bad odors include fresh flowers, essential oil mists, and simmering on stove-top herbs/spices such as cinnamon and cloves. Use proper ventilation including fans, open doors and windows where necessary. Another great strategy is to squeeze citrus (lemon/orange) and mix with purified water in a spray mist. Spray this in any necessary area. Not only does this provide a very fresh smell, but it also naturally cleanses the area as well.

Personal Care Products: These include nail polishes, makeup, perfume, lotions, cologne, etc. These products have strong artificial smells, which are the first sign of a potentially harmful chemical in action. Acetone, ethyl acetate, toluene, dibutyl phthalate & diethyl phthalates have been shown to be extraordinarily toxic products. Phthalates are xenoestrogens that affect hormone balance and damage the thyroid and reproductive organs as well as sex hormone production.

Anything you put on your body will penetrate your pores and enter your blood stream. Therefore, anything that goes on your body should be something you would naturally ingest. The best solutions include all natural make-up and perfumes. Essential oils make great for perfumes and colognes. Good oils such as coconut, Shea, & olive oil are great for natural skin enhancing lotions. The stable fats provide anti-oxidants and help nourish the skin`s protective microflora. This reduces oxidative stress on the epidermis and helps the skin look rich and healthy.

Shower Chloroform: Long, hot showers release massive amounts of chloroform gas. The hot temperature converts chlorine into its most toxic form: chloroform gas. This is a powerful carcinogenic agent that damages the respiratory pathways and greatly increases the risk of respiratory infection, asthma, allergies, and sinus infections.

The best solution is to get a high quality shower filter, lower the water temperature and reduce the amount of shower time. The shower filters will take out a majority of the chloroform. Short showers (less than 5 minutes) will continue to reduce the exposure. Cooler temperature showers produce significantly less chloroform.

Cooler showers also help close the pores of the skin. This helps prevent the skin pores from being clogged up by dirt and oil, which cause skin problems such as acne and eczema. Cold water also makes the blood vessels constrict which effectively reduces swelling and the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Cold water also enhances the shine of the hair and is naturally invigorating and shown to boost mental performance.
