Editor's Review:

Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Treatment starts with a detailed explanation of why to consider amalgam illness to be something that some people must have by comparing the well known statistics for how much mercury people absorb from their fillings to the well known statistics of how sensitive different members of a population are to a given toxin. This is for people who really don't know if they believe in amalgam illness or not (the other material available is rather sensational and I can't blame anyone reading it for having questions) before going any further.

Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Treatment discusses how to deal with physicians if you think you have a controversial disease - especially if you have the great "luck" to be covered by a managed care plan.

A key section is devoted to diagnosis - how to tell if you actually have amalgam illness instead of something else. It is also possible to be mercury poisoned from something other than amalgam, and the testing and examination described here is diagnostic regardless of the source.

How to get the dental work done safely if you have decided amalgam fillings are the problem is briefly described - there is a robust industry of amalgam free dentists if you know how to look for them.

The use of drugs and nutritional supplements to get the mercury out of your system is carefully presented - there are some important factors here that are not well described in the previous books on the subject and not all physicians who claim they know what to do actually give good advice.

Then comes what turns out to be the major section of the book - how to treat all the related health conditions amalgam illness can cause so as to relieve them while mercury detoxification proceeds. Since amalgam illness is not widely recognized in the medical community, most people with it get pretty sick before they get motivated to bounce around between doctors and eventually end up in front of one who tells them about it. So most victims have pretty serious, unpleasant health problems (like fibromyalgia or severe allergies) and they really need to make these STOP for the year or two it can take to get fully detoxed and let your body heal.

There are extensive tables of what to use for different conditions, a description of all the drugs and nutritional supplements suggested in the book, and appendices covering things like what the assorted clinical laboratory tests you might get actually mean, what other helpful books are that you might use, and supporting information like what the chelating agents are and how they work.

Reader Reviews:

This book is the most thorough book on the symptoms and treatment of mercury toxicity. It has a lot of information that is not available elsewhere.

He lists many supplements and their effects on mercury levels in the blood and the brain.

I do disagree with one thing he says. He says that chlorella is not a "complete" chelator of mercury. He says it liberates mercury and moves it around in the body. This may be so on some levels, as there is no way we can know how much is actually excreted per chlorella dosage. However, I have personally had great success at reducing my mercury and copper levels with a small dose of chlorella daily. The does was in the Greens First product as part of a complete green blend. Within 3 months of using this, my eyes became noticeably lighter in color. They had darkened after I had my fillings removed and used too much copper peptide on my skin.

In my opinion, chlorella is safe to use. I do not like the idea of using the chemical chelators he recommends as there is a big chance of side effects. They DO liberate mercury and could possibly increase blood levels without a further removal from the system. This information came from him.

Natural products such as chlorella, lipoic acid and the ion foot bath will pull toxins from your body in a holistic way that is safer for most people than risking the wrong dosage of EDTA or other chemicals.

The same people that made EDTA and other chemical chelators are the ones who are shoving mercury in us to start with. They refuse to acknowledge how thimerosol containing injections can harm your immune system.

This is the only reservation I have on this book. It is a real page turner, but could be a bit too technical for someone with a very limited background in medicine.

I recommend you order this book ASAP and educate yourself on mercury toxicity so you can recover your health.

This book had the only method that really helped get the heavy metals out of me. I tried NAC, Cilantro, MSM, Chorella, etc and those quit working after a while. Andy Culter's method using ALA works, and its based on sound science. If you are seriously ill from Amalgams and dental work, like I was, you need this book. Most doctors don't have a clue how to treat heavy metal poisoning. Andy Culter does.I agree with many of the reviewers here re. the immense depth & value of Cutler's book.

My big gripe is that it SEVERELY needs a going-over by a technical writer and editor. As someone else mentioned, a graphic artist would also be helpful. The book is an admirable venture of ambitious self-publication (though given the growing popularity of the subject, especially regarding autism, I would think he should be able to find a publisher to handle it). There certainly is an immense amount of knowledge here, but the discontinuous manner in which it is presented means you must plow through and understand darn near everything presented, then you must go back and winnow it down to a usable protocol. He also features a bizarre style of using strike-through type in places, e.g. you'll find lists of supplements to consume as part of a protocol, but then some items on the list will be struck out. Only by being really familar with the text will you possibly know why something is struck out, but even then it is a disorienting technique that does nothing but add noise to the task of sorting out the already dense material.

The net effect of the above problems means that for a book which serves as a reference manual on the subject, it really is a challenge to use it in a reference text manner. God forbid you want to snag it off the shelf and quickly look up the indications, pros/cons, and protocols for using something like DMSA in treatment.

For those who suggest giving a copy to your doctor, the idea is almost laughable. Most doctors will not have the time or motivation to plow through this. If it's not a suitable guide for laypeople, and it doesn't fit the reference needs of a medical practitioner, who is it for? Other chemists? Deep technical material is not an excuse to avoid communicating clearly.

If you aren't of a science minded nature, have some medical/health background, or you yourself are lost in a fog of metal intoxication, you will find this book frustrating. Having said all this, if you are fighting this battle, the book is a must-have addition to your library. It is unfortunate that much of its value is so lost in the presentation.AMALGAM ILLNESS is a book which which is useful to both the practioner and layperson alike. Dr. Cutler uses his background in chemistry to explain the rationale for chelating with small frequent doses and demonstrates why this is the safest approach to chelation therapy. I am a physician and am personally using his protocol on myself after my profession foolishly declared thimerosal-containing vaccines to be safe. It may be used for mercury poisoning from vaccines or from amalgams. As so many have eloquently stated in their reviews, I, too, have found this book to be a literal life saver. I've had it since it first came out, and have given it to at least five medical doctors/health practitioners and recommended it to a number of others. I regret not having been one of the first to recommend it; however, I can now relate that I use it as a reference over and over, deepening my understanding of the many aspects of the mercury problems. This knowledge is key to my healing.

The first thing I learned from Andy was to stand my ground with top allopathic and complementary physicians regarding my need for both Armour thyroid, and hydrocortisone, due to the mercury related pituitary problem, (despite their "tests"). So much of his protocol has been so helpful.

I deeply appreciate Andy's generosity of time and effort, to share his knowledge through the book.
