Kudos to the summer camps for paying attention to the health needs of their guests and doing something about it. Too bad our nation's public schools can't follow suit. Public schools remain a nutritional quagmire, where fast food restaurants and soft drink manufacturers are still allowed to sell foods directly to children -- IN SCHOOL!
It's time that public schools cleaned up their menus and ditched all the ingredients and foods that promote disease and obesity: white bread, soft drinks, fried foods, snack foods like potato chips, foods containing monosodium glutamate, foods made with high-fructose corn syrup, foods with added sugars or refined white flour, foods made with hydrogenated oils, and so on. Only then can public schools be appropriate environments for learning, since poor nutrition makes learning impossible (and gives kids ADHD, too).
As always, the private sector (with the summer camps) is moving quickly, while the public sector remains mired in food politics and bureaucracy that deliver no real progress.
When will our nation wake up and realize that we can't keep feeding our children disease-causing foods in our public schools?
