GMO - Their right to grow, our right to know by Victoria Moore

(NaturalNews) With Election Day nearing, one of the hot button issues in California is Proposition 37, the initiative to label genetically modified foods. Now, this reasonable request should be a no-brainer. We have to label ingredients in various products such as mattresses and diapers. Why wouldn't we want the same for the food we are consuming?

Unfortunately, corporations such as Monsanto, ConAgra and PepsiCo have spent millions of dollars to try to defeat the proposition and trying to deceive consumers using false claims that if the proposal were to pass it would cost taxpayers money, increase government bureaucracy, ban the sale of thousands of groceries and instigate frivolous lawsuits. All which have proven to be untrue. One might ask why these companies are pushing so hard and resorting to lies to try and crush an initiative that is not asking for an outright ban on GMO, but rather simply asking for transparency.

Banned in over 50 countries worldwide including Japan, Australia and all of Europe, Californians are not alone in being concerned with labeling GMO foods. Most polls show that 90 percent of Americans are in favor of requiring labels on any genetically modified food products.

The safety of GM foods

Unlike the testing process that is required for approving new drugs into the market, the FDA only request that companies conduct their own testing of any genetically engineered food, but does not review these tests unless requested by the company producing its products. Meanwhile, Monsanto's director of corporate communications has expressed that his company should not have to vouch for the safety of the biotech
food it creates because the company's main interest is in selling, and that assuring the safety is the job of the FDA, which has not conducted any testing to date. Both the World Health Organization and American Medical Association have called for mandatory testing of GMO foods, but to no avail.

Many peer review studies have been conducted on GMO food resulting in chronic toxicity including allergies, cancer and reproductive problems in all animals that were tested, as well as the few studies that were conducted on humans.

People are becoming more aware of the role that food plays in their health and want to avoid GMOs due to the fact that the food has not been proven safe and no long-term testing has been conducted. If the initiative does not pass, the health and well-being of millions of Americans will be denied while the companies focus on profit rather than the best interests of their consumers.

California's Prop. 37 is crucial because it is the beginning of GMO restrictions in the United States. It is a grassroots movement that is being supported by healthcare workers, farmers, consumers and a broad coalition including food product manufacturers and food safety organizations. Corporations, not individual consumers, have given all the money that has been pledged to oppose the proposition. Voting Yes on 37 is beneficial for people, the environment and humanity. The only one it doesn't benefit is the same pesticide company who created Agent Orange. The global elite use the United States as the official guinea pig for the rest of the world when it comes to such things as propaganda, vaccines and now GM foods. Now is our chance to eliminate one of their eugenic soft-kill weapons.
