With a 50-to-1 return on investment, California's anti-smoking campaign turn out to be a phenomenal success. It's a good start on public health education programs. I wish they'd invest in a nutrition program, because it would have similar returns in reduced health care costs.
From Reuters.com: California's large-scale tobacco control campaign has saved $86 billion in health care costs in its first 15 years, U.S. researchers said on Monday. The $86 billion reduction in health costs, based on 2004 dollars, represents about a 50-fold return on the $1.8 billion California spent on the program, they said.... more
